The house — royal in Chine. It is the main sight of this country.
Дом-рояль или «музыкальный» дом, который находится в городе
Хуайнань
в Китае. Вход в здание осуществляется через огромную скрипку, в ней и находится эскалатор, который и подымает людей в «рояль». Все строение выполнено и черного и прозрачного стекла. Вообще в здании использовалось очень много современных материалов, в том числе и стекло. А в дизайне необычного здания предусмотрели возможность удивляться его архитектуре, как днем, так и в ночное время суток. Более чем миллионное население города

довольно новой достопримечательностью, необычное здание в форме рояля и скрипки, которая прославила их город на весь мир.

Мир прекрасен и удивителен. А люди в нем умеют творить, создавать, удивлять, жить и любить.
Иногда
такая любовь приводит к созданию необычных и интригующих домов. Гениальность человека может выражаться в самом необычном проявлении, например, архитектуре.

Upside-down house .
Польша.

In this house all upside down and inside and out. He stands on the roof, and the entrance serves as an attic window. Contrary to common sense the Foundation of the wooden house looking at the sky.

Он стоит на крыше, а входом служит чердачное окошко. Вопреки здравому смыслу фундамент деревянного домика смотрит в небо.
Перевернута и вся небогатая обстановка внутри дома: стол, телевизор на тумбе свисают с того, что принято считать потолком в обычных зданьях.
The elephant in Thailand is a favorite and sacred animal. Thais love elephants, it’s the symbol of Kingdom.

Бангкоке построен современный необычный дом в форме слона. Тайский архитектор, благодаря любви к слонам, спроектировал роскошное офисное здание, но чтобы оно не «затерялось» среди других современных однотипных строений, он придал дому форму слона. Длинноногие башни, имеющее форму глаза окно и балкон в форме бивня выделяют здание на фоне других сооружений мегаполиса.

Определить уникальность этих домов.
The amazing house – cactus in the Netherlands. The architect likes nature very much. It is a green skyscraper. It has got 19 floors, 98 rooms. It’s a building which cleans the air in Rotterdam.
Удивительный «Дом-кактус»
Дом, похожий на кактус построили в Голландии в городе Роттердам. Желая приблизить человека к природе, архитекторы создали проект дома, вошедшего позже в десятку самых «зелёных» небоскрёбов. Дом сравнили с кактусом из-за зелёных открытых террас. В уникальном 19-ти этажном доме находится девяносто восемь квартир. Балконы каждой из них полукруглой формы, благодаря чему растущие на них растения освещены со всех сторон. Внешне эти балконы напоминают большие импровизированные ступени, словно завинчивающиеся наподобие спирали кверху. «Дом-кактус» — настоящее украшение той части города, в которой он находится.

. Так одна из главных достопримечательностей чешской столицы стала архитектурным воплощением танца, отсюда и второе название здания — «
Джинджер
и Фред». Совершая пешие прогулки по чешской столице, сложно не заметить одну примечательную конструкцию — «пьяное» и слишком современное офисное здание для несколько готической с виду столицы.

It is the house of central library. For its foundation the population chose their favorite authors and books.
Этот необычный дом «по совместительству» еще является Центральной библиотекой Канзаса. Наверное, если бы все библиотеки строились в таком оформлении, то недостатка в читателях у них бы не было. Жителям города было предложено помочь подобрать самые известные книги, которые как то связаны с названием Канзас-Сити. Эти издания были включены в инновационный дизайн Центральной городской библиотеки, чтобы стимулировать её посещение.

Introduction

There are a lot of unusual houses in the world. They are of different shapes, colours, situated in different cities, countries, even continets. But what really want to know is the answer to the question : « Why people build them instead of useful and practical houses?»

Aim of my project is:

Find out why people design unusual houses?

Search information about them and describe them briefly

Find the reason why people build these houses

Conduct a survey among pupils of our school to find out what our pupils think about these reasons

Analyze these reasons and compare them with architects`

Make a conclusion

At the very beginning of the project we searched for information about strangely looking buildings throughout the world. That is what we have found.

Home soccer ball.

Dutch architect Yan Sonke built it for him and his family in Malawi. It is in a shape of a ball. He created it because he likes football and he doesn`t have enough time to be at the stadium. This house very fast became popular among tourists and residents who don’t believe that people can live in this house.

Crooked house.

Crooked house is in Polish town Sopot and is the main city attraction. This unusual house hasn’t got straight corners. Architects perfectly built it into the historic city and made it very functional – on the ground floor there are many cafes and shops, on the first floor there are studios of popular radio stations.

Library in Kansas city.

We are used to the fact that a library doesn`t look attractive, but the library in Kansas city is not like the rest. The house looks like a row of bright books standing on a shelf. The height of each book is 7 meters and width is 2 meters. It took 2 years for ordinary readers of the city library to choose the names for books on the facade.

Office –basket

In American town Newark you can see an original house which looks like a huge basket for picnic. In this house the office of the company Longaber, producing goods for rest and picnic, are located. Its founder, businessman Dave Longaberger, decided to fix up monument of the company’s biggest seller the «Medium Market Basket». This 7 floor house is bigger than a standard basket 160 times.

Bubble house

On the Mediterranean coast there is Bubble House. Now the owner of the house is a famous fashion designer Pierre Cardin. The architect of this house is Antti Lovag from Hungary, but his father was Russian. Lovag wanted to build a house like a cave. In this house all pools, beds, armchairs, sofas and tables are round. You can live in this house, its price is 1000 $ per night.

Lucy the Elephant

The world’s largest and oldest elephant named Lucy is located a few kilometers from Atlantic City (USA), in the town of Margate City. It’s a monument 20 meters high and total weight 65 tons. This house was built in 1882 to interest land buyers to this location. It worked but Lucy collapsed and broke because it wasn’t repaired. But most people who live in Atlantic City wanted to restore it and now it looks nice and great. Today it is an interesting museum and inside it there are excursions every 30 minutes.

But if you think that such houses are only abroad, you are mistaken. There are a lot of them in Russia too. Let us show you some of them.

There is a strangely looking house which looks flat in Nizhnyi Novgorod. From the façade it looks like an ordinary building but if you look from the side, there is an illusion that it looks flat. It was built according to the principal of optical illusion. The yard of the house is triangular and is not seen from the façade. The main reason why the architect had to design the house is the size of the area (it was very small) and it made him cut one of its angles. The houses like that are in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Odessa.

There is a place in Samara, built in the shape of the symbol of unity of workers and peasants. It was built in 1932 near the plant, producing weapon. It was built to make workers spend more free time together.

There is a supermarket in Kostroma that looks like a real truck, but a huge one. It is 30 metres high and 20 meters wide. The only confusing thing about for the customers is how to enter it. You needn`t find the door of the cabin to get inside.

An upside-down house.

In the south of Russia in the village of Kabardinka, there is an upside-down house. It differs from the same houses abroad as everything inside the house is also upside-down : c hairs, tables, carpets etc are on the ceiling. This place is popular with tourists, but it is impossible to live in it.

An Egg House in Moscow.

In Moscow, in Mashkov Street, there is a building which attracts thousands of tourists every day. It is a two-storey building, suitable for living. There is a kitchen, a bedroom, an attic and a basement in it. It was built at the end of the 19 th century to be a Maternity Hospital, but the idea wasn`t realised.

The house built of oil waste.

This house was built in Tumen in 2013. It very expensive. It is a very safe place to live in. Besides, it is very warm inside it. Such houses can be used for living during cold Russian winters. In the near future houses like that will be in demand.

There is a 228 square metre house, located in Sverdlovsk. It really does look like a wild sea creature. The top level shows the area above the sea. The second level is the surface of the sea. Its basement is the bottom of the sea. Everything inside the house reminds the sea.

Having analyzed all these unusual houses, mentioned in the project and not only (we analyzed 100 buildings) we figured out 4 main reasons why architects design buildings like that. Most architects do it to attract tourists to the area and to earn money 35 buildings constructed (35%). The second reason is simply to attract people`s attention, 26 buildings (26%). The next reason is to be close to nature (24 buildings that makes 24%). The rest do it to realize their childhood dream, that is 15 buildings (15%). It was very interesting to find out what students of our school think about these reasons. You can see these results on the diagram.

We conducted a survey to find out what pupils of the 5 th and 10 th forms think about the reasons why architects design such houses. We interviewed 122 pupils. Here are the results: 58 pupils (48%) think they do it make their area more colourful, 36 (30%) schoolchildren are sure they do it to attract tourists, 15 (12%) believe architects want to glorify their home town, 8 students (6%) answered they simply want to show off, 5 pupils (4%) think architects have some mental disease. Having compared the results of the survey with architects` reasons, we understood that there is only 1 common reason mentioned. That is to attract tourists to the places they live.

Conclusion

The project was rather valuable. It helped not only to learn about the main reasons why architects build unusual houses but the showed that students of our school do not understand the reasons why people build houses like that. Maybe, it is because they don`t have enough knowledge on the subject. So, we decided either to shot a film or to design up a poster with the basic information about the most strangely looking places.
